Are you the type of person who enjoy having family and friends over to entertain? If so, you know how important it is to have enough room to accommodate a small crowd. No matter how you try, herding the crowd into a particular area of the home can prove difficult. Usually you will have a handful of people in the living room, a few in the dining room, most hanging around the kitchen, and a few wondering all over the place. However, with an open floor plan design, entertaining a small crowd can be quite the opposite of what is typical in closed floor plans as described above.
A closed floor plan provides for ultimate privacy. Each room is a dedicated area as it is isolated by wall partitions that divide each living space. This type of plan is ideal for many people who prefer closed quarters and a certain level of privacy within their home. In these homes you find that the main living areas are enclosed by walls. The kitchen, dining area, and family room are separated, thereby creating designated areas for different task whether it be preparing dinner, eating your meal, or watching television. Again this is great for privacy, but entertaining presents a real challenge.
An open floor plan is just the opposite of what is describe in a closed plan. Walls are eliminated where they are not needed. Often times in open floor plans, the family and dining areas are designed to be an extension from the kitchen. This provides a sense of openness with an airy space, allowing multiple family activities to merge and coexist. Mom can be preparing a meal while the kids are doing homework at the table in the informal dining area. In addition, dad can be just a few feet away watch TV while still within reach of the rest of the family. This type of space is great for entertaining because the three areas that your guest will migrate to are merged together.
You tend to lose a level of complete privacy with open plans and that is the one sticking point with this design arrangement. Nonetheless, this type of floor plan design is desired by many who enjoy the presence of family when doing daily task or just relaxing in the family areas. Most important is the environment that open floor plans create with family bonding and entertaining a small group of guest.
